ARTIST'S STATEMENTA long time of flying from here to there has provided an interest in the view from the window seat . I now require those moments of reflection, introspection, the total detachment, and the casual curiosity I find when traveling by air. Temporarily separated from my day-to-day, passing over entire continents, the drama of millions unfolding below... being in the present while surrounded by a seeming lack of it... travel and it's journey have become a form of meditation punctuated with urban lightshows, subliminally perceived crop signs, seemingly endless water, reverie, memory, anticipation... and white noise. Recreating aspects of the distancing and the resulting abstractions, peppered heavily with experience and intuition, are the focus of my current body of work. Adding helicopters into the mix of the medium, I am able to get a good visual on the land-patterns I seek, as I continue to explore the language of paint. My favorite and most inspirational teacher from SFAI is abstract expressionist painter, Julius Hatofsky. Julius, a consummate New Yorker who boasted 80+ years without ever owning a car or a drivers' license, said, “Making a painting is like riding a bus... all kinds of interesting things can happen along the way and if you miss your stop you can usually ride the line again.”
