Sue Nichol

My lifelong love of the sea and the edges of the land was inspired by my chilhood. I was born in Hartlepool and spent most weekends exploring rock pools on the beaches of the North East Coast or walking on the North York Moors with my Dad, a talented painter himself, and the family dog. I learnt to swim in the North Sea and to sail the dingies my dad built. Nowadays I paddle around in my kayak taking pictures of the land or underwater and these photos are often the inspiration for some of my work.

When painting I try to capture  the textures and atmosphere of the land and seascapes that are so much a part of my life. I am attracted to the ‘edges of the land', this maybe the coast or in the form of rocky edges. My paintings are of places that I know very well and  visit over and over again, both literally and imaginatively. I aim to capture them as they are exposed to the extremes and intensity of light. I use various materials, such as sand and texture paste to create the effects I desire. My paintings are a mixture of bold, strokes and impasto effects with echoes of more subtle areas through the use of glazes and fine brush work. I use brushes, fingers and sticks to make marks on the canvas.

I am also a keen photographer and an exhibition of my photographs of Travellers, who live on the edges of settled society, was shown at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield and toured various venues in and around Sheffield.
